In 2013, I rented a former Italian barbershop in Berlin-Wedding. Planning to use it as a rehearsal space for my yet-to-be-founded bossa nova orchestra, it instead turned into a interdisciplinary art space and voice studio.
Every month, I would host events that were essentially meeting grounds: A hybrid between a vernissage, dance lab, community kitchen and concert-turning-into-jam-session.
Also, I completely and utterly fell in love with my self invented side hussle: Teaching the voice and choir directing/arranging.
After moving back to Amsterdam, I have been longing for a space like that. So I bought an old wreck of a houseboat on the outskirts of town, lived there for a year to note what the light would do in different months and times of day.
Based on the light, I then made a boat design that blurs the lines between inside and outside as much as the lines between genres and disciplines are blurring inside.
Today, after years of preparation, it’s here: A space for art of all levels and disciplines, every floor a hybrid between inside and outside, seemingly in nature yet a mere 5 minutes cycle from Amsterdam Noord station.
